We regularly hear the words ‘stressed’ and ‘work’ in the same sentence, but what does it mean? Find out how the Health and Safety Executive define stress in the workplace and how you can spot the signs
The UK's Health and Safety Executive defines stress as ‘the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressures or other types of demand placed on them’.
This definition suggests what might cause stress to one person may not cause stress to another. In fact research into eustress suggests we each have a level of stress that is motivating for each of us. So it is important to note that stress is a unique experience.
The theme for this year’s International Stress Awareness Week is Working Together to Build Resilience and Reduce Stress.
One way that we can all work together to reduce stress in the workplace is to notice the signs of stress in ourselves and others.

Communication is key if you identify signs of stress in yourself or others. If you notice signs of stress in yourself, speak to your manager or a colleague for support. If you notice signs of stress in others then do not be afraid to check in with them and offer to listen.
